The Airco DH.2
The DH.2 project began with the need for a project to keep some of the habitual builders occupied after the completion of our Indy-Flyer. By May of 2010, the initial plan had been developed; build five full size replicas of the Airco DH.2 using modern materials.
The intrepid builders are Bruce Rose, Gary McCormick, Paul Sieber, Mike Pongracz, and Ernie Moreno!

Mike finally turned off the router after making 6,000 feet of cap strips. It's so much quieter around the shop now and we don't have to scream at one another anymore. Gluing should be much quieter.

We’re progressing nicely! We’re now planning the center section that ties together the fuselage and the wings. There has been a interesting discussion about the appropriate angle of incidence with a Clark Y airfoil (that already has 2 degrees built in). Our decision on this issue will deter mine where the next thirty-seven holes are drilled, and it’s one of those high-anxiety moments, that must be right.

You'll remember that last month we were all monkeying around with aluminum. Well, that is history. Welcome to Ernie's Lumber Yard.
All of the hanging ribs pictured below, were cut out of 4 mm marine grade plywood that goes for $65/sheet. Last Friday Ernie was up to his knees in sawdust and wood chips. What an animal!

"The Troops" are still working in spite of Ernie Moreno's absence. He took off for Oshkosh but Gary McCormick has been an excellent second-in-command; he knows how to keep us busy.
The last horizontal stabilizer structure came out of the jig and now, another week's worth of work will convert those structures into aerodynamic surfaces. As Ernie's booming voice would proclaim: "The shrinker machine is your friend and you'll learn to love it!"
