The President’s Corner

Is it possible? Yet another year has flown by in what seems to be no time at all. But let’s think back a little to what we as a chapter have accomplished this year. The big one and most significant was the liquidation of our hangar mortgage, and does that feel good.

The completion and flight of nine Nieuport 11’s and the attendance of two Nieuports at Arlington culminating in a champion award in the home built class for all those who committed their time and skills to this project.

We completed the overhaul of the Luscombe engine and the successful sale of the entire project.

And do not forget the renewed and significant efforts in the Independence Flyer, the acquisition and rebuilding of the Hornet, and the acquisition of the Legal Eagle.

Throw in two very popular Young Eagles events, a half dozen airshows, mowing the airport a few times, and one quickly realizes there is no moss growing around this chapter. In fact, we are without a doubt, one of the busiest chapters around. Great job everyone!

Plans for future chapter activities are still being formulated by your executive committee thanks to everyone’s participation in October’s mind meld (or was that mind melt). Several of these ideas are now being explored as part of our proposed five year plan. I will be working with the e-board to prepare a draft plan for general membership discussion by the February 2005 meeting.

It is also time for me to remind everyone to pay their annual membership dues. As always you will find Mike at a table in the corner at this Saturday’s Annual Banquet gathering ready to accept your dues. This year, you may find our new treasurer (in training) Bob there as well, eager to take on his new duties.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Annual Banquet, remember 6:00 p.m. December 4th –dinner at 7:00 p.m.

Al Cleveland

Executive Committee Meeting

EAA Chapter 292: November 13, 2004

1. Attendance: (11) Cleveland, Moreno, Schwarzler, the Browns, Medlock, Finberg, Andersen, Guy, Vasend, Pongracz.
2. Treasurer’s Report: With the change in officers at the general meeting today, Mike moved that Jerry Medlock and Chuck Kennedy be replaced on our banking accounts by Bob Schwarzler and Al Cleveland. Motion passes and the necessary paperwork was filled out. Mike reviewed the tax situation with the board. For the first year in our history we have exceeded $25,000 in revenue, and it was feared that we might need to begin to file a regular income tax statement. The controlling language that governs this area however stipulates that we are required to file Form 990 only if our revenue “normally exceeds $25,000.” The donation of #14 was indeed an exceptional event and we don’t anticipate being able to duplicate this on a regular basis. Although if we could it might be worth the trouble of filing taxes. Our checkbook balance stands at $4,748.76 and we are debt free. As of today 17 of 91 members have paid their dues for 2005. The Annual Report will be filed Monday with the Oregon Secretary of State, and our incorporation status is current. The Annual Report to EAA is due by December 15th. Bob says he’d like to transition into the new position gradually—like about next July.
3. Project Report: Steady progress is being made on both the Hornet and the Independence Flyer. Ernie and the crew have done a fine job on the Hornet wing and it is ready to be sprayed. The Indy Flyer crew will tackle a second wing tomorrow.
4. Form a Flying Club?: The board directed Kevin Davidson to explore the formation of a flying club based around one or several SkyRanger/Jabiru aircraft. This aircraft would be E-LSA, suitable for Sport Pilots, and possibly constructed by the members themselves with the assistance of other chapter members as a learning experience. It would seem feasible that twelve individuals could capitalize such a venture with a buy in of $2,500. Kevin promises more details soon. He has been an officer of Pacific Flyers and a past president of this chapter. If you would like to help Kevin try and launch this proposal, please contact him at (503) 364-3236.
5. Legal Eagle: The recent attempt to sell this aircraft on eBay failed. Greg believes that the reason it didn’t sell was because it hadn’t been test flown. We can do the modifications and fly it if we need too. Ernie is actively pursuing another buyer at $4,500 in Illinois, and the board authorized him to consummate this deal.
6. Calendars: 30 Calendars will be ordered on Monday and we hope they will arrive before December 4.
7. Satellite System: This costs $60/year and is used very little. It would be free however if just one new customer was to be referred to the Dish system by Al. If anyone is contemplating such a move please mention Al’s name and get the credit for the chapter!!! The purchase of a DVD player was authorized by the board. It must be less than $50 and JPEG compatible.
8. Hangar Manager: Three outstanding issues are still floating around: a tubing rack, a docking scheme for roll-around tools in the welding room, and a decent vacuum system for the building and the bead blasting cabinet. We need to see some progress here, gentlemen. If anyone can help with these projects contact Roger Vasend or Jerry Medlock.
9. Educational Seminars: Bob Brown suggested that we host an “Aircraft Electrical Systems” Weekend Seminar with Bob Nuckolls. Tuition is $150 each, and there is a limit of 25 people per seminar. Bob will try to arrange for this event in March or April. [At the General Meeting twelve people indicated they would pay to attend.—and we have your names!] Bob also volunteered to arrange for two additional knowledge-based seminars in the coming year. Henry Bartle offered to conduct a seminar in fiberglass construction techniques. Henry is building a Lancair IVP and is the owner of a Nieuport 11 and member of The Noon Patrol. Hopefully we will have a flier elsewhere in this issue announcing the particulars of the Nuckolls Seminar.
10. Name Tags: Bob Brown offered to sponsor an improved version of name tags for all chapter members. Our current collection is rather rag-tag and is simply not utilized. Bob will work with Bill Esther to come up with something that will do us proud. Bill Esther is now doing panel labels for RV aircraft and is developing quite a reputation. His engraved fuel caps are all the rage now and no self-respecting RV driver would be caught without one.
11. Andy’s Announcements: Andy thanked us for supporting the EAA State network and the Oregon Aviation Alliance. These two organizations are vital in monitoring the legislative session. [What will they think of this year?] He also announced that April 16th will be the date of the Annual Proficiency Test (APT) this next year. Mark your calendars now—it’s always a worthwhile program and the perfect time to get your BFR! Thanks to Andy and the Flying Farmers for putting on this wonderful program each year.

Respectfully submitted,

Mike Pongracz, Chapter Secretary

General Membership Meeting

EAA Chapter 292: November 13, 2004

1. Attendance: 35 members attended and three visitors were there for the first time: Burney Staffenson, Rick Kiter and Gary Klink. Welcome to our chapter!
2. Project Reports: Steady progress is being made on both the Hornet and the Independence Flyer. Ernie and the crew have done a fine job on the Hornet wing and it is ready to be sprayed. The Indy Flyer crew will tackle a second wing tomorrow.
3. Hangar Window Report: Zell informed the group that 3’x4’ vinyl windows would cost $81.40 each to put in the doors. He was jumped by a chorus of naysayers who insisted that they had to be tempered glass. Back to square one.
4. Commercial Hangar Project South of us: Greg Guy and Dave Martin briefed the group about the 200’x64’ hangar that will soon be constructed due south of the EAA hangar. It is scheduled to be completed by April 1, 2005. It will be similar in style to our hangar but it will be in steel and the doors will be 60’x18’. It is being built by Wayne Nutsch. We are told that it is expected to be for large twins and possibly even Citation-type jets. Yee-haw!
5. Special Event Parking: When some members expressed concern over the lack of parking now with the pending demise of our large vacant lots, Ernie made an excellent observation that we should be contacting Marquis Spa and Medallion Cabinets to see if they will allow us to park in these corporate lots on Memorial Day and for the Fourth of July Pancake Breakfast. Bob Schwarzler was recommended to operate a shuttle bus along the lines of the Oshkosh Tram System [he is one of Oshkosh’s finest you see.]
6. Educational Programs: Bob Brown made an initial pitch for the Nuckolls Seminar on “Design and Construction of Aircraft Electrical Systems. The cost will be $150 plus books. One dozen hands were raised saying they’d like to attend. Bob will try and arrange for a seminar in March or April and we will try to formally announce this program and arrange for sign-ups in the December Taledragger.
7. Election of Officers: The following slate was approved, and Mike Pongracz was approved as the representative to the State EAA. Congratulations to all and thank you for your service.

THANK YOU, ALL!

With this issue I have completed ten years as EAA Chapter 292’s newsletter editor. I have tried to chronicle our dreams and aspirations during that time. I’ve taken the liberty of sharing my favorite photographs with you again:

This photo is from October 2001. The caption read “Finally, THE BIG WIND! Al Cleveland, Doyle Lewis, Jerry Medlock, Paul Sieber, Jerry Stevens, and Ron Carroll all rejoice in the all mighty thrust of the first engine on the test stand. “

Like no other picture I published I believe this one captures the exuberance and camaraderie of grown men that are still truly twelve year olds and experiencing the pure joy of life.

Isn’t this the EAA at its best?

This photo, and most of The Noon Patrol photos, was courtesy of John Ousterhout. His contribution to The Taledragger was invaluable and we are all in his debt.

This picture was from Memorial Day of 2003 of course. We were hoping that this photo would find its way onto the cover of Sport Aviation.

I wish I could have made that happen (making the cover of Sport Aviation that is). It’s perverse that a moment of our greatest triumph could also be a moment of deep regret. Life is funny that way. But it’s their loss, not ours.

I staged one other picture—-an arc of Nieuport rudders-- which I treasure, and one that was simply a wonder.

This one was of the first flight of the Gypsy—the Chapter’s very first project and still one of our most beautiful creations.

I’ve been privileged to be witness to all of this, and I hope my successor will be as fortunate. I’ll try to help make that happen.

Best regards, Mike Pongracz

Independence Flyer Update

Henry Corbin sent in this picture on October 11th of the new seat arrangement for the Independence Flyer. This certainly looks comfortable. Ernie has trouble fitting into most planes and it looks like he has plenty of room here. This was one of the primary design requirements from day one: make it easy for a person to get in and out! Look at that headroom!

And Paul Wiegand (left) sent in this picture of the Indy Flyer Group—Paul, Henry Corbin, Ernie Moreno, Paul Gilman, and Dale Finberg—planning the seat bracing.
