Well, another year closes behind us as we prepare for yet another year of fun and camaraderie. Our activities coordinator, Bob Brown, is already working on an exciting schedule of events for this year. Kevin Davidson was expecting a DVD with lots of footage on the X-Prize winner, Spaceship One, in time for our January meeting. But delivery has been delayed, so we will surprise you with another program for our January 8 meeting. In February, direct from the Independence RV factory, Greg Robl has agreed to do a workshop on sheet metal riveting techniques. For April, Bob has secured Bob Nuckolls to talk to us about aircraft wiring. Yes, I skipped March because we have not filled that slot yet, but we will. Wow, what a party! Take a few good people; add in some great food, a little music plus a touch of libation and you have all the makings of a great evening. I want to thank Bill and Henry for cooking the birds and Paul for slaving over all those birds cutting them into delicious morsels for us all to devour, and our thanks to Marlene and Ernie for the champagne. Jerry for sharing that beautiful tree. And to Shelly for her help and contributions (that last-minute raid on their ice machine was a big help). And to everyone who attended and shared in the festivities. Between the karaoke and the turkey raffle, I think every one had a good laugh and some great fun. Word through the grapevine has it that after winning so much turkey meat, Bill will be selling turkey sandwiches here in the airpark to pay for his karaoke lessons. Any way you slice it, it was good to see everyone there and enjoying themselves.

No doubt, most of you have now seen the giant footprint to south. No it’s not Bigfoot. It’s the start of a set of twin hangars to be used as aircraft rental space. As a part of this transformation, the ditch along the front of the new hangars was filled in, leaving about 40 feet of ditch in front of our south hangar exposed. After some quick negotiations with the grading contractor, we now have an enclosed drain in place of that ditch, and when weather dries up this spring, we will put together a work party to finish the job and extend our parking. In the meantime, please exercise caution around that area as parking there at this time could be detrimental to your vehicle. Also, please be aware of the new access road across that pipe to the west side of the hangars. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the January meeting

CHAPTER HANGAR
We’re not here to promote AOPA membership. But if you are a member and buy gasoline, oil or services from an “authorized” FBO, you will get a 5% refund of up to $250 per year. Even if you buy only a few hundred dollars worth of avgas, it’s worth the trouble to apply for the refund.
Most FBOs including Independence Flyers Inc. here seem to be on AOPA’s list. Authorized FBOs are listed by state and city on the AOPA web site, www.aopa.org.
What’s the catch? You need to get an AOPA Visa card. But it’s free (there is no annual fee). The application is on AOPA’s web site. Applying for the refund is also done online, and the credit shows up on your next statement. I use my AOPA Visa card only for FBO purchases, and I always pay the balance, so there is never an interest charge. My current $9 credit will pay for the next gas-up in our little airplane. In yours, it might pay for your next hour of flying. It’s worth considering. –Dave Martin.
